Banks started the Culture series at a time when space opera was considered facile and passé, and took full advantage of that attitude to reinvent and revitalize the genre, offering a smart, playful, and often stylistically flashy subversion of space opera tropes wrapped around a core of radical politics.

This is a universe populated with exquisitely-drawn characters who experience some of the most honestly rendered emotional arcs in all of SFF. The Mistborn story begins 1,000 years after “the hero of prophesy” has failed to save the world and in fact “turned evil.” Given the chance to possess the power of a god or to save the world, the hero chose to take the power for himself. The second four-book series, The Aspect Emperor was a pretty massive letdown.
This is a slow burn, but for those with the patience for it—and who enjoy footnotes—learning more about this strange version of England and the dark and dangerous world of faerie that exists alongside it, is a truly rewarding experience. Now that the series is over, it’s time for you to read the books.

The Hobbit was the first real novel I read as a kid and ever since I’ve been on a steady reader’s diet of magic and adventure. I like Game of Thrones, Diplomat of Uram, Mistborn, and Lord of the Rings. There’s no doubt Patrick Rothfuss has a way with words. The plot is divided into two different action threads: the present, where Kvothe tells the story of his life to Devan Lochees (known as Chronicler) in the main room of his inn, and Kvothe’s past, the story in question, which comprises the majority of the books. Man the Stormlight Archive is some outstanding reading.
Four to six years between books is not uncommon with this series.
At least Riordan has a better developed world and magic system, though it still isn’t epic fantasy and is targeted to YA. Stephen Donalson’s- The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant was the cross over for me from Tolkien to Fantasy. Tolkien to Robert Jordan for me! Blood Song trilogy by Anthony Ryan – thoroughly enjoyable.

I was surprised it wasn’t on the list until I saw he hadn’t read it yet. Aslan-as-Jesus-figure is a well-worn genre joke at this point, but Lewis’s writing has such a transportive quality that the all-knowing lion is still effective and affecting. Don’t sleep on James Islington’s Licanius trilogy – its what its a far superior version of Wheel of Time. It’s been described as a cross between Tolkien and Nietzsche. The sheer number of new science-fiction and fantasy books published in any given year can be overwhelming, and it doesn’t help matters that both genres are so series … I’ll have to add those to my current reading list!

I am always looking for something new to read, and this gave me a few ideas. Odd Thomas is great, but I guess also gets filed with Dresden.
