The Victorian Environmental Water Holder (VEWH), Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and Central Highlands Water have worked together to secure water through a trial water exchange. He shares how the Wadawurrung people were created by Bunjil, our spirit creator, at Kareet Bareet, now known as Black Hill near Gordon, not far from Ballaarat.
Ceremony was conducted to welcome the extra 500 megalitre fresh sent down the river to protect cultural values, and the Wadawurrung community placed a Buniya Binak traditional eel trap into the river under a Cultural Fishing Permit.
These flows are called ‘water for the environment’, which is water set aside in storages and released into rivers and wetlands to support the plants and animals that live, feed and breed in them”, Blum-Caon said.
