Carlito meets two guys in jail and they push drugs when they get out. A great art going downhill because of garbage like this. Remember those gems! NO ONE WAS DECEIVED. He totally pulled it off!
Look, I like Jay Hernandez. More details at Jay Hernandez did his best but doesn't have the skills right now in his career to take on this role. Copyright © Fandango. It's like the director thought you can't be a "gangster" without wearing a hat. Luis Guzman even appears in this movie as an entirely different character. American director Brian De Palma's best known work is probably the 1983 crime epic Scarface starring Al Pacino, but its thematic companion piece Carlito's Way (1993) has plenty of fans too. I should have known better after seeing Mario Van Peebles and Sean Combs were involved. Actually it is a good story, with the beginning of the criminal life of Carlito, showing his ability to negotiate.
Seduced by the power of the brutal New York underworld, he enters a deadly circle of greed and retribution.
Variety October 6, 2005 Even by the notoriously undemanding standards of direct-to-vid spin-offs, Carlito's Way: Rise to Power is conspicuously underwhelming.
"Bringing the 'Hood to Life" (7:58) is a piece that covers the hair, the clothes, the locations, the style and everything else that's related to the era, followed by a six-minute gag reel that solidifies how funny Guzman is.
Sadly though, it doesn't seem to do that very well either.
This is the funny thing about the difference between actors and real life people.
After I heard about this film was in progress, I then later heard Pacino was not in it.
This was not a theater release, it is a DVD release. Simply a person who frankly doesn't give a damn.
Overall this film did not do a good job filling in the blanks for Carlito's Way. I'm a big fan of Pacino movies. Not to take away from Bergman's talent... but in my opinion he should of had a little more class. This one had its issues being a prequel. I think the problem here is that too many people are comparing this movie to the original and there is no comparison. R. 1h 33m. Better luck next time. When they are released, Rocco intermediates a heroin business with a family of the Italian Mafia leaded by Artie Bottolota Sr. (Burt Young). Es fehlt jegliche Brutalität und Action gibt es so gut wie kaum. Regardless of…. Instead this is a common theme in Hollywood, rip off previously good movies with disastrous prequels, sequels, etc. Ainda assim, os personagens (Van Peebles, em especial) e a trama so interessantes. However, this movie could've been a whole lot better even though it had a poor cast. After watching this I wish Pachanga came and whacked me out of my misery. 1 Star for the various fedora hats that every character wears. Meistens spielt es in Innenräumen. I thought that this would be the events that took place right before Carlito's Way but it seems to have happened a lot earlier than that which also means that there's room for another film to slide in between these two.
You know your in trouble when members of the cast are primarily known for things that are not acting.
Feels like some random generic gangster script they just changed the name of the main character to Carlito, when this has nothing to do with the backstory to Carlito in the original film. Overview - From the producer of Scarface and Carlito's Way comes the action thriller Carlito's Way: Rise to Power. I think people need to give it a chance without comparing it to the original and gangsta classic Carlito's Way. Blacks seem a bit crushed and the overall level of detail comes off as a bit flat, and the level of film grain is abundant. Carlito's Way: Rise to Power plays out like a cross between Goodfellas and Blow, as the film follows Carlito and his crew's attempts to bring cocaine to some of New York's poorer neighborhoods - while also avoiding several sinister underworld figures.
Angefangen beim Cast.

This time around, Jay Hernandez delivers a serviceable impression of a much younger version of Pacino.
And though this is the sort of story we've seen many, many times before, Bregman (who also wrote the film's screenplay) effectively holds the viewer's interest by … Having read the book on which this film is allegedly based a couple of years ago, I can say that there is little if anything from the original book. Filmaffinity no tiene relación alguna con el productor, productora o el director de la película. Soon after watching this film you will realize why it didn't even make it to the theaters! It's obvious this project was an attempt to make a quick buck rather a good film. And a half star for Jay Hernandez deciding to do an Al Pacino impersonation in the very last scene.
Basically this is just a movie about another drug dealer/ killer who was friends with Puff Daddy. As far as I'm concerned, thats the only way you can make this movie.

The overall look at the friendship between Earl, Carlito and Rocco starts out pretty well and holds up throughout the film, and even though he wasn't in the movie much in the second and third acts, Van Peebles does very well with what he had. Organized loosely by series. Very cool crime story with some interesting racial dynamics. © Letterboxd Limited.
Seduced by the power of the brutal New York underworld, he enters a deadly circle of greed and retribution. He was one of the baddest gangstas of his time but you would only see flashes of that in this movie. I have heard that there is another "missing piece" in between this film and the original, currently being worked on as a novel, if this is true, then time will tell how they all fit together, and many people criticising this film for not working with the original may have to eat their words.
Sadly there's no real revelation to be brought to Rise To Power in high definition.
Still, in my opinion, there was no reason at all for this to be made.
Are you people kidding me? Puffy's performance made me wish I was watching a 50 cent movie, and Chuck Zito (bodyguard for Pamela Anderson, occasional guest on Howard Stern) seems to be only their because nobody dared tell him otherwise. I can watch it all day without getting sick of it. Diddy's performance was good also , a big surprise, looking forward to future movies with him.
I checked this out when it first came out and i didn’t think I’ve seen it since then. Includes made for TV and DTV titles. I can understand that Bregman wanted to do some muted palettes to maintain a '60s feel without breaking the budget, but geez! Assisted by his two brothers-in-crime, Carlito is on the fast track to becoming Spanish Harlem's ultimate kingpin.
Maybe the worst part of this film is the casting for the lead role Carlito Brigante, whichever way you look at it everybody expects a Pacino, but casting Jay Hernandez is a let down, even though he is a fine actor, he really had a lot to do to try and follow in Pacino's shoes, and i am afraid to say he failed dismally. 1.85:1 widescreen and using the traditional VC-1 encode that Universal prefers to choose.
The only way you could even have a clue about what kind of person Carlito was, is to watch the original. Carlito's Way: Rise to Power HD IMDB: 5 Jay Hernandez (Friday Night Lights), Mario Van Peebles (Ali), Luis Guzmán (Carlito's Way) and Sean Combs (Monster's Ball) star in the gripping tale of the early years of gangster legend Carlito Brigante. It's a special breed of movie that I can find nothing entertaining in.
The only reason this movie was made was to capitalize on the cult following of the original.
Jay Hernandez kommt natürlich nicht an Pacino ran.
There were parts of the story that did seem to hold up quite nicely.
2005 Let Me Make You a Martyr. Awards But this just sucks. Das gehört allerdings bei Mafia Sachen einfach dazu.
