I enjoyed learning more about them because w. I found this book while looking for another piece of non fiction. I’m kind of a sucker for that kind of story. Over a hundred years after Veryl's ancestors, Charles and Mary Ann Goodnight, hand-raised two baby buffalo to help save the species from extinction, the sculptor and her husband adopt an orphaned buffalo ca. I didn't expect it to be such an important offering to the history of the American West or current issues that continue to plague buffalo populations today. This is a lovely book for anyone aged from 15 to 115. This was another suggestion from Joel at Landmark Booksellers when I was in TN, and my favorite title yet that I had sent home to TX. In American Buffalo, business is recurring theme. The lead character, Charlie the Buffalo, was abandoned when a herd moved along and was later adopted by Veryl Goodnight (relative of the famous Charlie Goodnight) and Roger Brooks. Ultimately, I found it heart-breaking, infuriating and depressing. The low-life characters often act in a Machiavellian manner in pursuit of money through business.

I expected a smart, funny story of a buffalo who doesn't know that he is a buffalo that comes into the lives of a Santa Fe couple. Written in the tradition of Ian Frazier’s Great Plains and the work of Garrison Keillor and Bill Bryson, A Buffalo in the House tells an important, uplifting story about one animal’s ability to touch human lives and reconnect people of all ages to the vanished past.
