A total of 122 Lactobacillus strains were isolated from household-prepared or commercial yogurts and pickles in Sichuan, among which 15 representative strains, along with another 37 strains isolated from human guts, were analyzed for their antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to 17 clinically significant antimicrobials applied in China by agar dilution method.
In contrast to the demonstrated synergy in time-kill models of ceftriaxone and ampicillin for E. faecalis, this combination does not appear to provide uniform synergy in E. faecium. The NCCLS method needs to be standardized in an appropriate medium to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of Lactobacillus.
For L. plantarum, the distributions of minimum inhibitory concentration to 12 antimicrobials were correlated between food and gut source (P < 0.05), and the percentages of resistant strains from foods and gut were also similar (P > 0.05) except to norfloxacin, where the AMR was more severe in gut than in foods (P < 0.05), while all 14 high-level vancomycin-resistant strains were from gut. D'Arezzo S, Mazzarelli A, Venditti C, Nisii C, Petrosillo N, De Giuli C, Vulcano A, Paglia MG, Bordi E, Di Caro A, Taglietti F. Microb Drug Resist. Comparative evaluation of penicillin, ampicillin, and imipenem MICs and susceptibility breakpoints for vancomycin-susceptible and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium. The MIC distributions and resistances to most antibiotics tested were close.
The food strains would unlikely aggravate the resistance of gut strains. In E. faecalis, the median (range) ampicillin MIC by BMD was 0.5 (0.5-1) mg/L and by GDS it was 2 (0.75-3) mg/L. Antagonism was not observed. Vaginal probiotic lactobacilli do not display uniform susceptibility to antibiotics. Clinical correlation is necessary and caution should be used when considering ampicillin and ceftriaxone for the treatment of infections caused by ampicillin-susceptible E. faecium.

Virginia Ocaña, Clara Silva, María Elena Nader-Macías, "Antibiotic Susceptibility of Potentially Probiotic Vaginal Lactobacilli", Infectious Diseases in Obstetrics and Gynecology, vol. All rights reserved. Synergy with the combination of ceftriaxone and ampicillin was assessed in all isolates using GDS crossing and double disc diffusion methods.
In isolates of E. faecium, the median (range) ampicillin MIC by BMD was 0.5 (0.25-4) mg/L and by GDS it was 2 (1-8) mg/L. Lactobacilli are low-virulence, commensal organisms of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts and are commonly used as “probiotic supplements.” Herein, we describe an episode of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis with bacterial superinfection secondary to administration of Lactobacillus rhamnosus in an 11-month-old female with trisomy 21.

After a skin rash developed, vancomycin was discontinued and replaced with teicoplanin. The MICs have shown that all Lactobacillus strains grew at concentrations above 10 μg/mL of chloramphenicol, aztreonam, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, streptomycin and kanamycin. Lactobacillus strains widely utilized in fermented foods would unlikely aggravate their AMR in human guts. Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) with 21 different antibiotics in LAPTg agar and broth was also determined.

The correlation of AMRs in Lactobacillus plantarum from fermented foods and human gut was examined. We are committed to sharing findings related to COVID-19 as quickly as possible. Resistance to high concentrations of metronidazole suggests that lactobacilli could be simultaneously used with a bacterial vaginosis treatment to restore the vaginal normal flora. The susceptibility rates for S. milleri were: penicillin, 100%, amoxicillin. However, the NCCLS procedure needs to be standardized for this genus. COVID-19 is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation.
